Boston College Eagles

Last week: 9-9, 2-3 ACC
Last rank: 14

The Eagles didn’t win a game in the ACC last year, and they’ve already got two on the ledger this year. One of those came this week as they took down NC State. They followed it up with a dud at Syracuse, losing by 23, but this is a young team that is still growing. The backcourt duo of Ky Bowman and Jerome Robinson has been a revelation this season, and they combined for 45 points in the win over the Wolfpack. Those two alone could go off and lead Jim Christian’s team to some good wins in the ACC — so favorites beware. Probably already out of the NCAA Tournament picture, this team is here to get better and hopefully ruin your season in the process. There’s a big week ahead in Chestnut Hill as Virginia and North Carolina come to town. It doesn’t seem likely, but picking up a victory in one of those two matchups would be huge for the young Eagles’ confidence going forward.

Duke Blue Devils

Last week: 14-4, 2-3 ACC
Last rank: 6

Without Coach K, Duke has had a tough time of late. After losing to red-hot Florida State last week, they had just one game this week on the road at Louisville. They weren’t able to eek out a win there either, and suddenly they’re below .500 in ACC play. The return of Grayson Allen helped as he had 23 points at the KFC Yum! Center, but the real difference-maker for this team is senior forward Amile Jefferson. He is a huge boon to their defense and on that sided of the court he doesn’t really need the ball in his hands which helps it go. Will Schreefer detailed exactly why he is so important here, and it looks like they’ll need him back as soon as possible if they want to turn their season around. They don’t play another ranked team until January 30 at Notre Dame, so they have some time to figure things out and still hopefully pick up some wins in the process. It starts this week as they host Miami and NC State, two teams that are easily-beatable for the Blue Devils even not at full-strength.
