What to love: The attraction to Terrance Ferguson almost exclusively relates to his 3-and-D potential from the wing. At 6-foot-7 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, he has ideal size to fit the archetype. From an outside shooting perspective, the country got a look at what Ferguson could do in the McDonald’s All-American Game where he sunk seven 3-pointers before heading to Australia to play professionally. As a defender, much of the belief in Ferguson is reliant almost entirely on his physical profile, which typifies the length teams want in their wing players.
What to hate: The results haven’t matched the expectations yet. Ferguson is converting just 33.3 percent of his 3-pointers in Australia. Notably, it’s a small sample size (51 attempts) and his history suggests that he should be a good, if streaky, 3-point shooter down the line, but there are some reasonable questions to be asked about just how good Ferguson can be from behind the arc. Defensively, there are even more concerns. Ferguson is averaging just 1.3 rebounds despite playing 16.7 minutes per game for Adelaide. He is also not creating many turnovers or producing weak side blocks like some of the other wing defenders in the draft class. Whichever team drafts Ferguson will be betting on his potential development more than the product that hits the court on day one.
