1. Boston Celtics

According to a report from Celtics Blog’s Keith Smart, Larry Sanders worked out with the Boston Celtics recently, and though no signing is imminent, Mass Live’s Jay King confirmed the report.

King’s sources said Sanders did not look overly impressive, and since the Celtics would need to waive someone to clear out a roster spot for him, it’s premature to assume that workout means anything.

However, the Celtics desperately need an interior presence as the league’s 28th-ranked rebounding team and 22nd-ranked shot-blocking team. Sanders could provide those things if he returns to form, preventing general manager Danny Ainge from giving up assets in potential trades for veteran centers like Tyson Chandler or Andrew Bogut.

The frontcourt is a bit crowded at the moment between Al Horford, Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko, Kelly Olynyk, Tyler Zeller and Jordan Mickey, but Sanders could theoretically bring a skill set specifically tailored to what Boston’s defense needs.

There are a number of factors still up in the air, especially for at team like the Celtics that has been searching for a blockbuster trade for a star with its treasure trove of assets. Their roster could look different a month from now, by which time perhaps Sanders will have gotten himself back into game shape.

But Boston is still not on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ level in the East, and if Ainge can’t find a trade for a superstar to propel them there, Sanders represents a last-ditch effort to find some kind of edge in a potential playoff series. It’s a gamble, but it’s one a team like the Celtics should make.
