Lorenzo Jerome

Strong Safety, Saint Francis Red Flash

The best defensive player at the 2017 Reese’s Senior Bowl was strong safety Lorenzo Jerome from FCS Saint Francis. He was something else in the back-end of Fox’s North defense. He had two interceptions, one off Tennessee’s Joshua Hobbs and one off Tiffin’s Antonio Pipkin. Jerome also forced a fumble on Texas A&M wide receiver Josh Reynolds.

Had the North wound up beating the South, Jerome could very well have been Senior Bowl MVP. His ball skills against great competition was simply outstanding. Jerome had a great week of practice, but really shined in the Senior Bowl.

He didn’t let the big stage get the best of him. It was really up in the air which safety was going to have the best day on Saturday. Senior Bowl practice design made it difficult to really extract much out of the safeties other than goal line defense and taking the right angles to help out cornerbacks on an island.

CBS had Jerome as the No. 6 strong safety in the 2017 NFL Draft class with a fourth to fifth-round grade. With a good scouting combine, he might be a late second or early third-round pick. Jerome had the best week of the many small school guys in Mobile. It wouldn’t be shocking if Fox takes him in the draft to play for the 2017 Bears.
