Terrance Ferguson is a project. The 6-foot-7 shooting guard who initially committed to Arizona before deciding to spend his gap year in Australia was a five-star recruit coming out of high school because of his size and athleticism combine to create a prospect with good upside if he can put it all together. At his most likely outcome, Ferguson will primarily be a 3-and-D player who can use his athleticism to attack close outs and play in transition. In the outlier case, he develops the ability to score more in one-on-one situations, but his ball-handling abilities are nowhere close to being able to do that yet.
Ferguson isn’t shooting the ball well in Australia as he’s made just 31.7 percent of his 60 3-point attempts over 25 games played. However, he’s clearly earned the trust of his coaches as he’s started 17 of those contests and is attempted 2.4 3s per game. 17 game samples won’t define Ferguson’s shooting prospects, especially since we’ve seen him shoot it better before. Nothing sticks out more than his 7 3-pointers in the McDonald’s All-American Game last year.
Defensively, Ferguson has excellent tools to be a multi-positional defender at the next level. At 6-foot-7 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, he has the length to bother opponents, but he needs to add some weight to his frame in order to be able to compete physically. Ferguson seemingly has the right attitude to get better on this end of the floor.
