OG Anunoby

SF/PF, Indiana

Here’s what we know about Indiana’s OG Anunoby. At 6-foot-8 with a massive wingspan, he is the most versatile defender in the 2017 draft class. As a freshman, he showed off his ability to defend the perimeter by locking up Kentucky’s Jamal Murray in the NCAA Tournament. He has the girth to battle in the paint as well as the foot speed and length to bother small opponents. In two seasons with the Hoosiers, he’s averaged 2.2 steals and 2.2 blocks per 40 minutes, both excellent numbers for a combo forward.

What we don’t know about Anunoby is a little more concerning. The sophomore is currently out for the season with an ambiguous knee injury. How he performs in medicals — assuming he declares — will have a major effect on his draft position. If Anunoby is able to make a full recovery that includes the return of his athleticism and explosiveness, then he warrants being selected this high. So far, all we have is Indiana’s official statement suggesting he’ll do just that.

The other thing we don’t know is what Anunoby will bring on the offensive end. Last season, there was hope that Anunoby would develop into a competent 3-pointer shooter, but before his injury, those numbers had regressed significantly in 2016-17. Right now, he’s at his best picking up garbage buckets and slashing to the rim. If he can’t shoot the ball, it limits his upside significantly.
