3. Bring in some help in the secondary

It is no big secret that the Los Angeles Chargers have been weak in the secondary for quite a while. Two years ago, star safety Eric Weddle moved on to Baltimore to become a Raven, leaving the Chargers with a big hole in their defensive backfield. The Chargers need to upgrade that position in the worst way this offseason, and lucky for them, an AFC West rival may be losing one of the best safeties in the game.

Eric Berry has made it clear that he does not want to play under the franchise tag in 2017, which means he may be out the door. If he does become available, the Chargers need to make him priority No. 1. Berry is an elite player at the position, and bring the kind of intensity that the Chargers defense has been lacking for the past few seasons.

The NFL is a passing league, and if you cannot stop the pass, you are liable to find yourself at the bottom of your division. The Bolts play against Derek Carr twice a season, and will have to face players like Tom Brady, Dak Prescott, Eli Manning, and Kirk Cousins next season. Their schedule is filled with opponents with solid quarterbacks, so the Chargers cannot afford to be weak in the secondary again in 2017.

Berry may be a longshot, but with the Chargers moving to a new city, they need to make a splash during free agency. The Bolts also pick at No. 7 in this April’s NFL Draft, so they may be in the market for a player like Ohio State safety Malik Hooker, or Jamal Adams from LSU if he is still available. The cornerback position also needs help, so expect the Chargers to target defensive backs hard this offseason.
