Suicide Squad is now an Oscar-winning film, and that’s alright

We know live in a world where Suicide Squad is an Oscar-winning film — so let that soak in a while.

There are always surprises a the Oscars, some bigger than others. There are years that a Best Picture winner probably shouldn’t have won over another film, but at least those movies are in the upper echelon of cinema.

When you dig deeper into the more technical categories, that’s where it’s easy to lose yourself to rage. That was the case on Sunday when the critically panned Suicide Squad won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

Yes, we now live in a world where Suicide Squad can tout the title ‘Oscar-winning…’, and that’s something no one saw coming.

It’s easy to vomit all over this, but be better than that. Don’t take the easy route out; the Oscars weren’t saying that Suicide Squad was the best film of the year rather it had the best makeup. That’s kind of undeniable when you consider what the film presented on the screen and what it was up against.

Suicide Squad as a film was a gigantic disaster, but this is something cool that the Oscars does — it honored the people that did their jobs right. Say what you will about the stitched together nature of the film or the hacksaw job that was done in the editing process, but not everything about this movie was terrible.

In fact, as we learned tonight, some of it was Oscar-Worthy.

So before you go on some cliche, overused diatribe about how Suicide Squad is now an Oscar-winning film and that’s a scourge on the cinematic world, consider what you’re actually saying. By slamming the film as a whole — which didn’t win an Oscar — you’re devaluing work that was clearly appreciated and admired by Oscars voters.

It might be cool to bash the movie, but like it or not it’s an Oscar-winner for makeup. How about celebrating the only people who actually did their jobs instead of complaining about it.
