Colorado: Goose Gossage

For someone from the state of Colorado, Goose Gossage is decidedly un-mellow. The Hall of Fame reliever has made it an annual tradition to hold yearly sessions in Spring Training to bash current players, the state of the game, and the way today’s pitchers are coddled and treated like big babies.

Gossage was born in Colorado Springs, and still calls his birthplace home. The city has also dedicated its youth sports complex in his name. Gossage spent 22 years in the big leagues, with most of his time coming before the rise of the three-out closer. He only saved more than 30 games in a year twice, but did have four seasons with more than 100 innings, unheard of for a reliever today.

It’s possible, however, that his career was ultimately hurt by that workload, as he was never an All-Star after the age of 33, and had a 3.77 ERA over his final eight seasons. Gossage might not like the comparisons to Mariano Rivera, but they’re not even legitimate. Rivera was much better in the playoffs.

This Goose Gossage signed baseball is a must-have item for fans.

Even with all of its snow, Colorado has produced several dominant players over the years, including pitchers Roy Halladay, Mark Melancon, and Kevin Gausman. Closer Brad Lidge is also a Colorado product, attending high school in the state.
