Carolina Panthers: 5 offseason needs
By John Buhler
2. Pass rushing along the defensive line
An area of great strength could be on the precipice of being weak if the Panthers don’t act pragmatically this offseason. When Carolina is good, they usually dominate the line of scrimmage with their stout defensive line.
Carolina has two of its best defensive lineman in defensive end Charles Johnson and defensive tackle Kawann Short. Johnson could be retained, but he is past his prime as a player. Expect Carolina to franchise tag Short. Then again, Gettleman is the same general manager that nixed last year’s tag with Norman, allowing him to hit free agency and sign with the Washington Redskins.
Defensive line is the position group that defines Panthers football. Without it, what are they? Do we really want to go down that rabbit hole? Slapping the franchise tag on Short is almost certain and Carolina can afford to do so.
As for Johnson, the Panthers may need to target a pass rusher in the upcoming NFL Draft. If Carolina doesn’t go safety, there is a great chance the Panthers take a guy that can get after the quarterback at No. 8.
