2017 NFL Mock Draft: Bears tap Deshaun Watson
By Brad Weiss
The New York Jets entered the 2016 NFL season with high hopes, but it was clear early on that the season would become a disaster. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick never played to the level he did the year before, and a borderline playoff team turned into one that would earn the sixth overall selection in April’s draft. With that pick, the Jets should look to draft a franchise quarterback, and North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky has the physical tools to be just that.
Last April, the Jets spent a second round pick on a quarterback, taking Christian Hackenberg from Penn State. Hackenberg was supposed to be the team’s future at the position, but it became very clear that he is years away from being a starter in this league. The Jets cannot afford to go into next season with such questions at quarterback, so bringing in someone to start right away make be the jumpstart they need to turn the franchise around.
Trubisky started only one season on Chapel Hill, so questions about his experience may hurt his draft status. However, he should put together a fantastic pro day, showcasing the kind of arm that NFL teams are always looking for. While he may not have a ton of college games under his belt, he did show incredible accuracy last season, and was one of the better quarterback in the country at limiting the turnovers, which is an area the Jets could certainly use help in.
