Budda Baker

Safety, Washington Huskies

A big reason that Buffalo struggled so mightily on defense last season was because Ryan couldn’t stop getting burnt like toast in the back-end. The defensive backfield was a mess for the Bills. No wonder why the Pegula Family hired McDermott.

McDermott played safety in college for the William & Mary Tribe and got his first big break in the NFL coaching the secondary on Any Reid’s staff in Philadelphia. He got by with marginal talent in the back-end outside of one year of Josh Norman in Carolina, but that may have had more to do with Rivera being such a good front-seven coach.

Expect Buffalo to go with a safety with one of their earlier picks. While targeting LSU Tigers’ Jamal Adams or Ohio State’s Malik Hooker in the first round could happen, going with Budda Baker out of Washington may be the better option in day two.

With Baker, McDermott can get a hard worker that helped turn around a Washington Huskies program for Chris Petersen in Seattle. Baker may not have as high of an upside as some safeties in this draft, but he should be a marginal starter at worst in the NFL. He should be solid, unlikely to bust.
