Chad Wheeler

Offensive Tackle, USC Trojans

Overall, it wasn’t really a great combine for the USC Trojans. Adoree’ Jackson looked good at cornerback, but most of the Trojans in Indianapolis looked bulky and slow. Did we expect defensive tackle Stevie Tu’ikolovatu to be a big guy? Totally, but offensive tackle Chad Wheeler really struggled at the combine.

He had the seventh slowest 40-yard dash among offensive linemen at the combine with a 5.48. A few of the guys slower than him were interior offensive linemen and not tackles out there to set the edge.

His bench press of 15 was tied for the worst of any offensive linemen in Indianapolis. So Wheeler has slow, top-end speed and sub-par upper body strength? He can’t jump high with the second-worst vertical of only 20.5 inches. Wheeler had to do well in the crucial 20-yard shuffle, right?

No, he didn’t do well in that event either. Wheeler tied for the sixth-slowest time of 5.01 in that drill. If he goes in day two of the NFL Draft, he’s going to end up being a turnstile out on the edge. He and LSU’s Godchaux’s combines were perhaps the two most startling given their NFL projections.
