2017 NFL Combine: 10 players who hurt stock
By John Buhler
At Wisconsin, running back Corey Clement was seen as the heir apparent to the throne vacated by Heisman finalist running back Melvin Gordon, now with the Los Angeles Chargers. Clement was a really good college player, but may lack the explosiveness to factor at the next level.
He was one of the few senior running backs creeping up some teams’ draft boards. Clement looks to be a day two selection as a solid change-of-pace guy at the next level. However, his 2017 NFL Scouting Combine may have inevitably knocked his draft stock down a peg.
Clement ran a 4.68 at the 40-yard dash. That was the fifth-slowest time at the combine among running backs. Two of the guys slower than him are true fullbacks. While he did well at the bench press with 19 reps at 225 pounds, his vertical of 28.5 inches was the third-worst and his broad jump of 115.0 was sixth-worst.
Perhaps Clement can have value at the next level, but it would have to be as a power back. He’ll need to go to a team with a proven bell-cow in front of him. If any team thinks they are getting the next great Wisconsin running back, they are sorely mistaken.
