2017 NFL Draft: Miami Dolphins 7-round mock
The Dolphins hit their front seven with their first two picks, now they will look to help the back end. At safety, both Rashed Jones and Isa Abdul-Quddus are coming off season ending surgeries. Jones looks to be set to be ready for opening day. However, Abdul-Quddus has question marks around his return date.
Jones is the player who is more in the box than the other two. It would mean that if the Dolphins are to draft safety, they would be looking for a center field type of talent. Thompson is the perfect fit for that need.
Thompson is another former wide receiver. However, it brings his great ball skills and an ability to read the quarterback. Thompson is still raw in some of his angels, and is a poor tackler who would not thrive in the box. However, he is an athletic center fielder, who would be a asset to a team that needs over the top presence. His weaknesses would be less exposed with Jones, Alonso and Reddick roaming the open field, and he can just worry about reading the quarterback and attacking the ball.
Some may see Thompson falling even further than the third because of his raw ability in the position. However, without a fourth round pick this is the perfect time for the Dolphins to strike on a player with the chance of giving him real snaps next season.
