Patrick Mahomes II

QB, Texas Tech

The Kansas City Chiefs were the class of the AFC West in 2016, as they clinched the division title in the final week of the season. However, despite having the No. 2 seed in the AFC Playoffs, the Chiefs had an early exit, losing at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team plans to head into next season with Alex Smith as their quarterback, but his time as the real answer in Kansas City has to be coming to a close.

Kansas City will pick pretty late in round one, though they could find their answer at the quarterback position. Patrick Mahomes II has played his way into earning first round buzz, but that is no new news for our mock drafts. We have had Mahomes going in the first round for months now, and going to Kansas City at No. 27 would be a perfect spot for him in April.

Smith is the consummate pro at the position, which means Mahomes would be entering an organization that can teach him while he sits. Smith is going to play next season, so making sure his replacement is on the roster for 2017 is going to be a priority. Mahomes has all the physical gifts to be an impact player at the next level, and really all he needs is time to work on his footwork.
