5 reasons Alshon Jeffery signing is good for Eagles

4. Better QB than Jay Cutler gives Jeffery upside
While his ability to stay on the field became an issue, Jeffery’s underachievement had other factors. Most notably, the Bears had poor quarterback play from Jay Cutler. He consistently held the team back from being able to contend for the playoffs and he often threw ill-timed interceptions while only having a rating above 90 once in his career. This was despite having Jeffery and Brandon Marshall to throw to. Cutler has since been released by the Bears after a horribly inflated contract worth $126 million. Carson Wentz will have his first opportunity to throw to a weapon that can stretch the field, and continued improvement would make him and Jeffery a dangerous combination.
Wentz already showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season, as he threw for 3,782 yards with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a 79.3 rating. Rookie quarterbacks often struggle in the NFL, which makes Wentz’s numbers look even more impressive. It should also be noted that Wentz had an injury-prone Ryan Mathews as his top running back and typical slot receiver Jordan Matthews as his top choice. The more weapons, the merrier certainly applies to a quarterback looking to prove his worth for a previously hurting football franchise.
