1. A Terrific Defense

The Broncos fell off substantially against the run last season, finishing 28th in the league (130.3 yards allowed per game). But they were No. 1 in the league against the pass (185.8 yards per game), with 42 sacks (tied for third-most in the league).

Most of the pieces of that stout Denver defense remain in place, and if DeMarcus Ware comes back in free agency that will only help. Some reinforcements down the middle are needed, at linebacker for sure and perhaps safety as well as defensive line, but barring a virtually unprecedented injury bug or widespread decline in play the Broncos will be one of the NFL’s best defenses again next season.

The Cowboys never really put together a strong defense while Romo was there, and that side of the ball was often a notable weakness. Denver has basically the opposite situation right now, with a talent-laden defense and an offense that needs something to spark it. Romo can bring instant, necessary credibility under center, assuming he can stay healthy and his last full season of play in 2014 (3,705 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions) is at all relevant. Signing Romo fits the Broncos’ tilt toward a win-now mentality, with the goal of going back to the Super Bowl next February.
