Jay Cutler: 5 free agent destinations for former Bears quarterback
By John Buhler
The New York Jets have to get it right at quarterback this season. Otherwise, head coach Todd Bowles will not be getting a fourth year in the Big Apple. Ryan Fitzpatrick had a career year in 2015, helping the Jets go 10-6 and barely miss the AFC Playoffs.
2016 was a terrible year for Gang Green. The Jets went 5-11 with four starting quarterbacks, not one of whom did anything more than hurt the team. Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith will be free agents. Are the Jets comfortable with Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg, or a rookie from the 2017 NFL Draft Class?
They could trade for somebody like Trevor Siemian, but they might have slightly more upside in 2017 by going with Cutler. Potentially waiting for Cutler in New York is a familiar face in quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates.

Bates and Cutler were on four different teams together: the 2006-08 Denver Broncos and the 2012 Bears. Cutler made his only Pro Bowl with the 2008 Broncos. The 2012 Bears went 10-6 and barely missed the NFC Playoffs. New York could get a 2015 Fitzpatrick season from Cutler in 2017 if the Jets sign him.
