Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets’ plan to volume shoot at will from distance has been made crystal clear. Led by MVP candidate James Harden, the Rockets are more concerned with outscoring teams than defending them. They have attempted 445 more and made 125 more 3-pointers than the next teams in those categories.

The Rockets have potent scorers in Eric Gordon and Lou Williams to bolster their bench, but their depth at forward is limited. Second-year forward Sam Dekker is still developing, as he missed most of his 2015-16 rookie campaign due to back surgery.

The Rockets don’t have a perimeter player taller than 6-foot-4 they can trust to play significant minutes in big games. In the huge Sunday night win over the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers, Dekker logged only five minutes of action.

Omri Casspi at 6-foot-9 would bring length and shooting to the Rockets’ arsenal. His size would give the Rockets increased flexibility with lineup combinations. Casspi is shooting 39.4 percent on 3-pointers this season, which would rank second on the Rockets behind only Ryan Anderson.

Anderson and veteran Trevor Ariza occupy the bulk of the minutes at the forward spots. And the Rockets’ perimeter shooting vastly drops off behind them. Casspi would infuse life into a reserve forward unit shooting a dismal 29.2 percent on 3-pointers.

Right now, Houston seems destined for the No. 3 seed in the Western conference playoffs. This practically guarantees them a semifinal matchup against either the Golden State Warriors or the San Antonio Spurs. Since injuries to key players have rendered both juggernauts vulnerable, Houston would be wise to seize this potential opening.
