Carlos Watkins

Defensive Tackle, Clemson

The Cleveland Browns have a gem in Danny Shelton, who is quietly one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. But now it’s time for them to add some more talent to their interior defensive line. Carlos Watkins makes a lot of sense. He has the potential to be a starter and add some size to their defensive line. Moreover, Watkins gives Shelton a little bit of help because he can make plays if given the right match ups. Sure, the Cleveland Browns need a nose tackle to free up Shelton, and they’ll address it later. But Watkins is an intriguing enough guy to warrant a third round selection.

He won’t make a name for himself by rushing the passer, but as he showed in college, he is a force up the middle. Watkins is an excellent run stopper and moves remarkably well for someone his size. However, he can be penciled in for about 2-3 sacks a year, which is pretty good for a run stuffer.

This is admittedly more of a depth pick, however, the Cleveland Browns are getting a starter in Watkins. They need help all over the field, but perhaps their biggest area of need is on the defensive line. With Garrett and Watkins, the Browns can add two difference makers to a line already featuring Shelton.
