2017 NFL Mock Draft: Free agency provides shakeup
By Brad Weiss
The San Francisco 49ers were one of those teams that we expected to draft a quarterback in April, but that has changed with the recent moves within the organization. The 49ers made a two-year investment in Brian Hoyer, bringing the veteran quarterback over from the Chicago Bears. Hoyer will serve as the team’s starter for the next few seasons, giving the 49ers the opportunity to grow their next franchise player at the position.
With this draft class, the 49ers may very well be able to get a quality quarterback early in round two, or they could wait to a quarterback-heavy 2018 NFL Draft. In addition to Hoyer, the 49ers also brought in wide receiver Pierre Garcon, and paid heavily for fullback Kyle Juszczyk, so they should be better on offense in 2017. The addition of Earl Mitchell along the defensive line filled a big void in the roster, and they should use the second overall pick to take Jamal Adams from LSU.
Adams is a great safety prospect, and thanks to the injury to Malik Hooker, he should be the first player off the board at his position in April. Some scouts believe Adams could be the best overall prospect in this draft, but we will leave that distinction to Myles Garrett. Still, Adams is going to be a difference maker right away for the 49ers, and with a former star safety as the team’s general manager, he will have a great person to talk to as he begins his NFL journey.
