Like his teammate De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk is destined for a challenging defensive matchup in the second round against either Dayton or Wichita State. The Shockers may represent the more difficult pairing because their roster features a number of athletic, long wings who can hound the smaller Monk.
That said, if there’s one player to keep an eye on who could shoot his team into the Final Four, it’s Monk. The Kentucky freshman is averaging 25.4 points per 40 minutes this season on a 27.6 percent usage rate and a 59.2 true shooting percentage. He shoots it just as well guarded as he does unguarded and can get hot in a hurry. Monk does his best damage from behind the 3-point arc where he’s converted 40.3 percent of his 236 attempts this season.
It will be interesting to watch Monk’s aggression in the halfcourt over the course of the tournament as well. In the last month or so, he’s been more insistent on getting to the rim after avoiding those situations early in the year. If Monk can show off his shiftiness and maybe a bit of vision, it could bump up his value in the draft.
