1. Cleveland State Creates March Madness (1986)

The Indiana Hoosiers were the No. 3 seed. Little known Cleveland State were the 14 seed. The Vikings pulled off perhaps the first huge upset in March Madness history, beating one of the best teams Bobby Knight ever had, 83-79.

This game created several stars. Ken McFadden led the way, becoming a household name with an impressive performance. However, he was not able to parlay it into an NBA career, though he did play in the CBA and USBL. To this day, McFadden is the leading scorer in Cleveland State history. Clinton Ransey became a star as well after notching 27 points against the Hoosiers.

Cleveland State kept the party going past the second round after beating St. Joseph’s. They nearly got into the Elite Eight, but the Navy Midshipmen proved to be too much for them.

Many consider this the first real March Madness upset. The Hoosiers were heavily favored and nobody had heard of Cleveland State at the time. CSU wouldn’t win another NCAA Tournament game until 2009 when they beat another four seed in Wake Forest. But this one will stand out forever as the birth of March Madness.
