9. Bryce Drew sinks Ole Miss (1998)

Going into the 1998 NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss got a number four seed. They got to face the 13 seed Valparaiso Crusaders. In one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of March Madness, Bryce Drew sank an epic game winning shot to lead the 70-69 upset.

This was a huge upset, mainly because of the magical buzzer beater by Drew. Valparaiso got their first ever NCAA Tournament win. They’d go on for a second upset in the second round, beating the No. 12 seed Florida State Seminoles. As of 2017, those two victories are their lone wins during the NCAA Tournament.

Drew would go on to have a quiet NBA career, spending seven seasons split between the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, and New Orleans Pelicans. He averaged 4.4 points per game, so he never quite lived up to his epic buzzer beater. Drew currently coaches for the Vanderbilt Commodores after spending the first five seasons of his coaching career with his alma mater.

For Ole Miss, this is the worst upset in their school’s history for basketball. They rebounded nicely the next season, pulling off a slight upset over eighth seed Villanova. This remains the signature moment for Valparaiso and the worst moment in March Madness for the Ole Miss Rebels.
