5. Florida Gulf Coast Downs Georgetown (2013)

Georgetown has a very rich tradition in basketball. However, in recent years, they’ve been prone to upsets. Perhaps no upset was more tragic than losing to Florida Gulf Coast 78 to 63. The Hoyas were the number two seed while the FGC Eagles were the No. 15 seed. This upset means a lot to March Madness for several reasons.

First of all, anytime a 15 seed advances, that’s a lot of fun. The entire nation fell in love with the Eagles because of their fun style of play. Before the Los Angeles Clippers became “Lob City”, FGC were known as “Dunk City”. They also became the first 15th seed to advance to the Sweet 16 after beating San Diego State in the second round.

Secondly, people tuned into to watch the Eagles after their win over Georgetown. Their games saw huge ratings and once again showed why March Madness is the best. For the Hoyas, this is arguably their worst loss in their history. Head coach John Thompson III and Georgetown were able to exact some revenge on West Virginia, beating them as a No. 11 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. But still, whenever anyone thinks of March Madness upsets, everyone remembers this one because of how awesome the Eagles were.
