4. Middle Tennessee Upsets Michigan State (2016)

Entering the 2016 NCAA Tournament, many picked the Michigan State Spartans to win it all. After a very strong season, the Spartans were considered by many the favorites to win the national title. However, head coach Tom Izzo and Michigan State got a rude awakening, losing to Middle Tennessee State 90-81.

Reggie Upshaw became a household name after leading the upset with 22 points. He’s just one of many stars who were born because of March Madness. The win was the first for the Blue Raiders since 1989 and just their third overall win in the NCAA Tournament.

MTSU used their fast paced offense and aggressive defense to take advantage of the Spartans. After getting the lead, the Blue Raiders were able to hold off Michigan State despite an impressive charge by them. This is another example of a 15th seed beating a No. 2 seed. Usually, the games are close. However, this one wasn’t as close as the score suggested.

Izzo has won a lot of games in his career and consistently overachieves. However, this loss was a tragic one for the Spartans. Perhaps there’s a bit of recency bias for this one, but it’s still one of the greatest March Madness upsets of all-time.
