3. Steve Nash Leads Santa Clara To Upset Over Arizona (1993)

Perhaps the greatest star ever to be born because of March Madness is Steve Nash. The Canadian point guard went to a tiny school called Santa Clara in California. He led the way as the Broncos beat the heavily favored Arizona Wildcats 64-61 in 1993. Santa Clara became just the second No. 15 seed to advance past the first round by beating a number two seed.

Many March Madness stars don’t wind up doing much in the NBA. Nash is one of the exceptions. As a sophomore point guard, he had 10 points and four assists to help lead the upset. Nash went on to lead them to two more NCAA Tournament appearances before joining the NBA. He’s widely considered to be the best Canadian basketball player of all-time. Someday, Nash should join the legends in the Hall of Fame.

Arizona had lost just three times in the regular season. They had a very talented trio, most notably led by Damon Stoudamire and Chris Mills. The Wildcats should probably have been the number one seed, but they proved maybe they shouldn’t have been with this loss.

It wasn’t the prettiest upset because Santa Clara nearly gave the game back to Arizona with horrible free throw shooting down the stretch. But this put the Broncos on the map.
