2. “Stone Cold” Stephen F. Austin Stuns West Virginia (2016)
The West Virginia Mountaineers have a history of being a great basketball program. However, they got one heck of a Stone Cold stunner from Stephen F. Austin during the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The No. 14 seed Lumberjacks dominated the Mountaineers, winning 70-56. What makes this the second biggest upset of all-time is SFA did it by beating WVU at their own game.
With an aggressive defense and an opportunistic offense, the Lumberjacks shocked the world. They were led by guard Thomas Walkup, who controlled the game and led the charge on defense. The Mountaineers fouled a lot during the game. Underwood’s clutch performance at the free throw line made them pay dearly. He hit 19 of the 20 free throws he shot and scored 33 points.
The Lumberjacks nearly pulled off another upset in the second round, but wound up losing to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a close game.
This was the game that got Brad Underwood hired by Oklahoma State. Bob Huggins suffered yet another tragic loss as the Mountaineers head coach. They’ve never won the NCAA Tournament and 2016 was a good chance for them to do so. This one has to hurt for WVU fans. But for SFA fans, this remains the program’s one shining moment of glory.
