Southampton: Matt Targett

There are few teams that do youth development more effectively than Southampton. The Saints are well known for producing quality talent, and then eventually selling that talent off for a profit. Matt Targett appears to be the next key Southampton youth product destined for stardom.

The young left-back has been catching eyes for years in the Southampton academy. Targett is excellent on the ball for a defender, and his ideal position is probably as a left wing-back. In Southampton’s system, Targett may not get the repetitions he needs to truly excel. However, at age 20 the Englishman has plenty of time to adequately fulfill the expectations many have.

Despite being injured recently, Targett still appears to be a key part of Southampton’s future. The club has kept him in the first team squad when he’s available for the most part, and Targett has succeeded.

The one question over Targett is his defending. The way the full-back position has changed in recent years lends itself to Targett’s skill set, but to really set himself apart, he’ll need to be adept with and without the ball.
