West Ham: Edimilson Fernandes

Signing the Swiss international Edimilson Fernandes was a key move for West Ham in last summer’s transfer window. The move enabled them to add youth and talent to their bench, and should pay dividends in the future.

Fernandes got his first goal for the Hammers in mid-October in an EFL Cup match against Chelsea. The midfielder had himself positioned perfectly outside the box, took a touch and finished with precision and power. He almost resembled French midfielder Paul Pogba when controlling the ball just outside the box.

And West Ham seem to be moving Fernandes toward a Pogba-type role in the midfield. The two players are the same height and have similar styles of play. Fernandes lacks the seemingly robotic control on the ball that Pogba can maintain for long stretches. His ability to pass is getting better with each appearance in the Premier League.

West Ham have played him in 18 games as a substitute and starter. The impact he makes on a game-by-game basis is inconsistent. The talent and skill are there; he’ll just have to gain the experience that comes with more playing time.
