A history of FIFA Soccer: Ranking the best games from FIFA 94 to FIFA 17
19. FIFA 99
FIFA 99 was an absolutely amazing game. It had a tough act to follow in Road to the World Cup but the last game of the ’90s certainly stepped up to the plate. One of my favorite memories of this game is its amazing intro, which was set to Fatboy Slim’s “Funk Soul Brother.” After watching the intro, it’s almost impossible not be pumped up for a game of FIFA.
Gameplay
Although it was only the next game in the series, FIFA 99 feels far superior to it’s predecessor. The whole game seems to run more smoothly than 98 ever did which makes for a brilliant gaming experience. The graphics were as good as they could be for the time and players’ movements looked more natural and less robotic.
New Features
There were some aesthetic improvements to FIFA 99 but perhaps the most important new feature was the introduction of the “European Dream League.” In this game mode you could play as any of Europe’s elite teams in a league format. This is a feature that many FIFA fans would love to see back in the new games but it’s yet to make a return. Tricks and flicks became more elaborate in FIFA 99 and there was also the addition of a dirty slide tackle, which would normally result in a straight red card.
Special Features
Besides some different cheats one of the most interesting hidden gems from FIFA 99 was the fact that Brazilian legend Ronaldo was disguised under the name “A. Calcio” and hidden among the substitutes in both the Inter Milan and Brazil squads.
Verdict – Top three
This is easily one of my favorite FIFA games of all time. If a soccer game was ever to be remastered, I’d want it to be this one.
