Jrue Holiday

,

Jrue Holiday hasn’t had the easiest season of his NBA career. Just prior to the season, his wife, Lauren, gave birth to their first child. Shortly after, she had surgery to have a brain tumor removed that was discovered during the pregnancy. The surgery was successful, but was a trying time for the Holiday family. Jrue missed the first dozen games of the season to tend to his family before joining the Pelicans.

Having missed parts of his three previous seasons in New Orleans with various injuries, Holiday has managed to stay healthy for the most part this year. He has played fairly well and helped anchor the Pelicans as a result. Holiday likely won’t ever become an All-Star again, like he was during his last season with the 76ers. His averages of 15.7 points, 7.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds are solid, if unspectacular. But after family tragedy and an amount of injury history, solid play this season is a win.

Holiday’s role has been somewhat marginalized following the acquisition of DeMarcus Cousins. Adding a second ball-dominant big has limited what the point guard is asked to do. This could force Holiday to seek employment elsewhere as a free agent this summer, and he may be the best free agent on the market based on his play this season. Still just 26, Holiday provides efficient scoring and distribution from the point guard position while playing adequate defense. He may not be an All-Star again, but should continue to be a solid point guard in the league.
