Positional Power Rankings: 30 best point guards in the NBA

Derrick Rose called the Knicks a “super-team” prior to this season. He has requested a max contract as a pending free agent this off-season. Though it may be painful to him and his fans, he may need a dose of reality. Rose is no longer the MVP he was as a 21-year-old in Chicago, and he isn’t even playing at an All-Star level any longer. Injuries have taken their toll on the 28-year-old.
Some of Rose’s statistics really aren’t that bad. He has maintained some of his explosiveness, and that has enabled him to average 17.8 points per game on 46.7 percent shooting. Rose can drive and get the ball into the bucket. His assist and rebounding averages of 4.4 and 3.8, respectively, aren’t terrible, but they aren’t good either. The bottom line is this: Rose can still score, but fails to do anything else well at this point.
Rose manages to be somewhat of an offensive liability because of his jump shooting. His 21.7 percent average from deep is abhorrent, and he has nearly stopped shooting those shots. Opponents simply don’t need to respect him from the perimeter at all. In addition, Rose has turned in a very poor defensive effort this season and has become a major liability on that end. His play has been a factor in the Knicks disappointing 27-45 season and it is unclear if anyone will give him the chance to start again this summer.
