Top 10 college football quarterbacks going into 2017 spring practice
By John Buhler
Not all the best quarterbacks in the college game play in the Power 5. Guys like Boise State’s Brett Rypien, Toledo’s Logan Woodside and Wyoming’s Josh Allen are all interesting players that will dominate in the Group of 5. However, the best combination of productivity, pro aspirations and situation has to go to Quinton Flowers of the South Florida Bulls.
Flowers is a rising senior, having started the last two years for South Florida under then-head coach Willie Taggart. He is a dual-threat signal caller that is accurate, mobile and willing to throw the ball down field. South Florida should be one of the better teams int he Group of 5 in 2017. It helps gaining former Texas Longhorns and Louisville Cardinals head coach Charlie Strong to run the program.
Strong’s arrival in Tampa has the Bulls on everyone’s radar in the AAC. One could argue that South Florida will be the favorite to win the Group of 5 conference this fall and contend for the coveted New Year’s Six Bowl bid.
At South Florida, Flowers has completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 5,208 yards, 46 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his first three seasons with the Bulls. As a runner, Flowers has a career 402 carries for 2,594 yards and 31 touchdowns.
Losing running back Marlon Mack to the 2017 NFL Draft could sting for Flowers. However, he does have the platform to have an incredible senior season at South Florida. If he plays up to his ability in 2017, we could be looking at a solid third or fourth-round quarterback heading into the 2018 NFL Draft.
