Texas freshman Jarrett Allen is a 6-foot-11 center with the potential to excel in ball screen actions and as a defender in the NBA. He averaged 16.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per 40 minutes this season while posting a 57.1 true shooting percentage. Allen was often forced to play with a second big man on the floor, which will likely change in the NBA.
Offensively, Allen has potential as a screener who can roll to the rim and eventually develop to play more pick-and-pop. He has the length and athleticism to finish at the basket and is a developing jump shooter. So far, most of Allen’s made jumpers have come in the mid-range, but he has a smooth looking stroke that could eventually branch out to the 3-point line. To make these ball screen actions more effective, Allen needs to work on making contact as a screener more consistently.
On defense, Allen showed some improvements during conference play becoming a more impactful rim protector and rebounder. With a 7-foot-6 wingspan, the 18-year old should be an imposing presence in the middle of the floor. He needs to improve his awareness and reactions in order to be a more consistent shot blocker.
