Rodions Kurucs

SF, Barcelona II

Rodions Kurucs is a 6-foot-8 wing who recently made his EuroLeague debut after spending much of the season playing for Barcelona’s reserve team. With excellent size and the ability to create his own shot, Kurucs has the potential to be the type of two-way wing that the modern NBA thrives on.

In international competitions and in LEB Gold, Kurucs has impressed with his ability to take opponents off the dribble. He changes directions well, has a quick first step and uses his size to his advantage once he gets to the basket. Once Kurucs shores up his 3-point shot — he’s made just 32.1 percent of his 3s this season — he’ll have more opportunities to attack close outs and open up space for his teammates. The 19-year old is also improving as a passer, which would make it possible for him to be a secondary creator on an NBA team.

On defense, Kurucs’ size is noticeable. With long arms, he has the potential to guard multiple positions at the next level. Right now, his biggest statistical impact is as a weak side rim protector, but he’s shown quick enough hands to get into passing lanes when he needs to.

Kurucs may ultimately be a draft-and-stash candidate, which is why the Portland Trail Blazers makes some sense as a landing spot. Portland has three first round picks this year and integrating all of them could be a challenge.
