Josh McCown

Quarterback, New York Jets

Another year, another team. Yes, that seems to be the narrative of journeyman quarterback Josh McCown’s NFL career. After spending the last two years in the AFC North with the Cleveland Browns, McCown now finds himself temporarily atop the quarterback depth chart with the New York Jets.

New York is the one NFL team that is still nebulous about what it plans to do at quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick is still a free agent. Geno Smith signed with the New York Giants. Then there’s the Bryce Petty/Christian Hackenberg saga continuing on as background noise in East Rutherford.

For now, McCown can come in and compete for the starting job with the 2017 Jets. In all likelihood, he will end up being an elite backup and be outstanding in the quarterback room like he usually is.

In 14 NFL seasons, McCown has completed 59.1 percent of his passes for 14,242 yards, 79 touchdowns and 69 interceptions. His career quarterback rating of 78.2 is respectable and so is his career yards per attempt of 6.7. However, his career record of 18-42 as a starter tells you everything you need to know.

McCown has shown over the years that he can pick up any NFL offense and make plays in it on a moment’s notice. That being said, he tends to get injured and can’t elevate his team beyond the occasional hot month. McCown won’t take the Jets to new heights this fall, but it wasn’t like they were going anywhere promising in the first place.
