10 college football April Fools’ pranks you would totally believe
1) Texas leaves to form the Texas conference
For years, Texas has been in rumors of one day leaving the Big 12 to either go independent or join the Pac-12. They’ve always presented themselves as a big fish in a little pond holding up the rest of the conference. The problem with these theories though is that none of them are quite Texas enough. Being the big brand independent has already been done by Notre Dame and joining the Pac-12 means sharing the spotlight with USC. For Texas, they want to be the biggest school in the room no matter the situation.
Which is why they will leave the Big 12 to go off and form the Texas Conference. This isn’t independence, but a brand new football conference started by the University of Texas. However, this conference will only have one member. Texas. It will also feature a conference commissioner, conference play, and a conference championship game just like a regular conference. How does a conference with one team have all this? By playing itself of course. Talent rich Texas is so deep they’ll have no problem getting the man power for Texas vs Texas games twice a year. Once in the regular season and then the rematch during championship week — seen exclusively on Longhorn Network.
Making the deal even sweeter, by playing in a single team conference Texas will be free to schedule the toughest non-conference anybody has ever seen. This will sit well with the playoff committee and assure a consistent spot in the College Football Playoff. They’ll never have the issue of not being conference champions and they get all the benefits. It’s amazing that more teams haven’t done this yet, but that’s why Texas will do it first.
