Gonzaga is heading to the National Championship! Let’s do handstands!

Gonzaga is heading to their first ever National Championship game. The Washington-based university has evolved from a threatening mid-major to a national power, but they were never quite able to get over the hump. Notorious for early exits and misplaced expectations, this year’s Gonzaga team entered the tournament with a single loss but still couldn’t escape criticism. They were considered the weakest of the one seeds and were a popular early upset pick.

The Zags proved them all wrong. They flew through their region of the tournament and overcame every difficult matchup put in front of them. When they finally reached the Final Four it was like Gonzaga had finally escaped the dark shadow constantly looming over them. The job wasn’t done, however. A South Carolina team in the middle of a Cinderella season, also in their first Final Four, stood in their way. There were dramatics, and it came down to the final minute, but Gonazaga managed to knock them off too. Finally, they could let all of their frustration out through celebration.

That locker room is filled with more than just excitement over a win. It’s full of relief. Finally they accomplished what nobody said they could do. Mark Few and his team will never have to hear about choking in the big moment ever again. Which is why Few decided to breakout a handstand amidst the celebrating. Just don’t hurt yourself coach! There’s still a game Monday night to win after all.

This season’s been one hell of an accomplishment for the Bulldogs. They now wait to see if they face Oregon, or longtime power North Carolina. Whoever they get, Gonzaga will be ready to face them head on. They’ve already fought through every bit of adversity and criticism that’s been thrown at them. What’s one more game to group like this?
