NCAA Tournament 2017: 15 best moments
2. Malik Monk and Luke Maye trade clutch shots
The Elite Eight game between Kentucky and North Carolina lived up to the considerable hype with the most memorable finish of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
Two of the most storied programs in the history of the sport squared off in Memphis for a spot in the Final Four, treating fans to a close game throughout. North Carolina was in control early with a nine-point lead late in the first half thanks to Luke Maye, who had a career game with 17 points.
Kentucky wasn’t done yet, and managed to tie the game at 37 at the 17:17 mark of the second half. The lead changed hands three more times after that, until North Carolina seemingly put things away on a pair of Theo Pinson free throws to go up 71-64 with 54 seconds to go.
A pair of 3-point makes sandwiched around a North Carolina turnover over the next 14 seconds put Kentucky right back in the game, and Malik Monk buried a game-tying three with 10 seconds left. Pinson then dribbled up the court to find Maye, who fittingly capped the best game of his career with a long-range 2-pointer at the buzzer for a 75-73 Tar Heels win.
While there were some exciting finishes throughout the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky’s comeback followed by Maye’s buzzer beater in the final minute was tough to top.
