Florida State Football Spring Game 2017: 5 things to watch for
4. Is there any quarterback depth?
While Francois is firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback, Saturday’s game will give Jimbo Fisher a look at the rest of the thin depth chart at the position.
Francois won the starting job over senior Sean Maguire last summer, which allowed the Seminoles the luxury of having an experienced backup. Maguire has since graduated, and prized recruit Malik Henry decided to transfer in December after just one season in Tallahassee.
That leaves the Seminoles with two returning quarterbacks on the roster: Francois and J.J. Cosentino. The redshirt junior has thrown just 19 passes in his career without looking particularly inspiring in limited action, which could leave the backup job in question.
Four-star recruit Bailey Hockman is also in the mix, and walk-on Jake Rizzo will likely get some playing time in the Spring Game. A strong showing from Hockman would help ease some of the concerns and will be important for both the short-term and long-term quarterback situations.
Fisher has done a terrific job developing quarterbacks throughout his coaching career, so the Seminoles will likely be fine down the road. Still, an injury to Francois would be devastating for 2017, and the quarterback depth will certainly be one of the key storylines of the spring.
