Dylan Bundy has had an odd pro career thus far. The No. 4 overall selection in the 2011 first-year player draft out of high school, the talented right-hander was thrust into big league action as a 19-year old the following season. He faced just six batters in two appearances, and didn’t pitch in the big leagues again until last year.
Bundy didn’t pitch anywhere in 2013 as a result of Tommy John surgery. He saw limited duty in High-A and Low-A the following season, and pitched just 22 innings in Triple-A in 2015 and two more in the Arizona Fall League. Out of options at age 23, Baltimore was forced to keep Bundy in the major all last year or risk losing him on waivers.
It worked out pretty well. After making 22 appearances out of the bullpen, Bundy moved into the starting rotation. He was healthy enough to pitch 109.2 innings, and posted a modest 4.02 ERA while flashing the swing-and-miss stuff that made him a top prospect.
Bundy will have a key role in the Baltimore rotation to begin the 2017 season, especially since top starter Chris Tillman began the season on the disabled list. The 24-year old will have plenty of opportunities to prove he’s one of the best young pitchers in baseball, and with a good showing, he’ll shoot up this list.
