Malik McDowell

DL, Michigan State

The Washington Redskins know they need to be better on defense in a very tight NFC East next season, and they helped bolster the unit this past week. The Redskins signed star linebacker Zach Brown to a one-year deal, grabbing the former Buffalo Bill who had nearly 150 tackles this past season. The team also signed safety D.J. Swearinger, and defensive lineman Stacy McGee and Terrell McClain, as they made a concerted effort to get better on defense for next season.

While McGee and McClain are good players, that does not mean the Redskins should consider themselves done at adding player up front on defense. Malik McDowell would be a nice fit at No. 17, and would give the Redskins a dominant force on the defensive line. McDowell could play in a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme, as he has the size and speed to be good against the rush and the pass.

Washington lost a ton on offense, as wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon are gone from last year’s team. Quarterback Kirk Cousins is playing on a one-year franchise tag, so the time is now if the Redskins want to make a serious run in 2017. The NFC East is going to be a bear to navigate next season, but if the Redskins can be better up front, it will certainly give them an advantage over their competition.
