It may sound silly, but when the Nationals beat the Marlins in the first two games of the 2017 season, it looked like Washington could go through the entire season without spending a day outside first place.

However, three losses in the next four games – including one-run defeats to Miami and the Phillies, as well as a shocking 17-3 loss to Philadelphia Saturday, meant the Nats spent the majority of Sunday looking up to the Marlins in the standings.

Nevertheless, after Miami’s loss to the Mets Sunday night, we’ve got a four-way tie in the East. Miami travelled to Washington to open the season, and picked up one win out of three hard-fought games with the Nationals. The Marlins then arrived in New York and clobbered the Mets 7-2 and 8-1 in the first two games of the series before falling Sunday night. With six games on the road, and three wins against the heavyweights in the division, it was a successful week for the Fish.

Injuries are already an issue for New York, but the Mets survived an up-and-down week and finished at .500.

The Philadelphia Phillies scored 35 runs over the course of the week, which was more than any other team in the NL East, and more than all but two clubs across the big leagues. However, 17 of those runs came in a Saturday blowout victory over the Nationals, and 12 of those runs came in the first inning. The power surge was a great sign, and helped Philly take a series victory over the division favorites to carry momentum into Week 2.

The schedule makers didn’t do the rebuilding Braves any favors by slating the club with opening series against postseason contenders in New York and Pittsburgh to begin the season. Atlanta split the first two games of the campaign with the Mets, but lost four in a row to close the week – including three straight one-run losses while being swept by the Pirates.
