Caron Butler of the Dallas Mavericks says that if  Tony Romo chose basketball over football he “wouldn’t have been surprised if he would have made it”

In a move to honor Tony Romo the Dallas Mavericks will suit up Romo and sit him on the bench for their season finale against the Denver Nuggets at the American Airlines Center.  This is meant to let the fans of Dallas sports have one last time to cheer on the longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback. However, Caron Butler of the Mavericks grew up playing basketball with Tony Romo in Wisconsin and had some strong statements about his skills on the hardwood.

“Believe it or not, man, when we were in the prime of our careers, I used to always talk about it: [Romo] could have easily been a professional basketball player,” Caron Butler told ESPN. “And a lot of people were like, ‘Man, you’re crazy for saying that,’ but Tony could shoot. He could handle the ball. He had a knack for scoring, man, he really did.”

Romo, to this day, is the all-time leading scorer at Burlington High School with 1,080 points. Scoring wasn’t the only thing that Romo was good at.  His high school basketball coach Steve Berezowitz said one thing set him apart from all the other point guards was “his vision.” This should not come as a surprise as vision of the court and vision of a football field do not seem to be mutually exclusive skills.

If we are lucky as sports fans, we will get to see if Romo has the skills against the Denver Nuggets and Rick Carlisle will put him into the game for a minute or two. With the Mavericks eliminated from playoff contention, it couldn’t hurt. Let him get in there and drive the lane. Then again, with Romo’s brittle body, maybe that isn’t the best idea.
