Draft status: In without an agent
The Toronto Raptors have loaded up for a 2017 playoff run by acquiring Serge Ibaka and PJ Tucker to help transform themselves into a much better defensive team. Those trades also emphasized the value that the franchise’s front office puts on versatile defensive pieces, which is why they’re projected to take SMU’s Semi Ojeleye here with the No. 23 pick.
The 6-foot-8 combo forward clocks in at 230 pounds and at least a 6-foot-10 wingspan, which means he has the size that teams look for in switchable defenders. He has the necessary lower body strength to hold of taller players in the post and the athleticism to move well on the perimeter. Ojeleye’s skill set didn’t translate well statistically this season at SMU, but it’s worth noting that he averaged 2.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per 40 minutes in a pair of seasons at Duke prior to transferring.
Ojeleye’s versatility also extends to the offensive end and offers the potential for him to create some mismatches at the power forward spot assuming that’s where he ultimately lands. The 22-year old can handle the ball, allowing him to push the pace after grabbing a defensive rebound. He can also knock down outside shots. He made 42.4 percent of his 172 3-point attempts this season after taking just 23 triples in two seasons with the Blue Devils.
