Mitchell Trubisky

Quarterback, North Carolina Tar Heels

It wouldn’t be the NFL Draft if a quarterback didn’t go in the top-10. Frankly, it’s a tad odd that a quarterback won’t end up going No. 1 this year. The Cleveland Browns aren’t that incompetent to over-draft a fringe, first-round quarterbacking talent and take him at No. 1. No. 12, well, maybe.

As for the New York Jets, they really don’t know what they are doing at the quarterback position. Entering 2017, they have the ageless backup Josh McCown presumably as their No. 1. Backing him up is Air Raid product Bryce Petty and the highly inaccurate Christian Hackenberg. None of those three quarterbacks are taking the Jets to the AFC Playoffs this January.

That being said, New York should be the first team to take a quarterback in the upcoming draft. The right choice for them at No. 6 should they go quarterback is Mitchell Trubisky of the North Carolina Tar Heels. He presents the best combination of readiness to play as a rookie and the overall build of a franchise quarterback.

It would be advantageous for the Jets to give Trubisky a redshirt season in 2017. If he has to start in the final quarter of the 2017 NFL season, so be it. Don’t expect him to be a Dak Prescott level starter year one. The Jets just don’t have the talent around him for that type of rookie season. He could be like Carson Wentz was in 2016 for the Philadelphia Eagles. Let’s hope he’s further along that Paxton Lynch was with the 2016 Denver Broncos.
