The San Jose Sharks face the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 of their NHL playoff series at Rogers Place on Thursday, April 20.

The San Jose Sharks blew out the Edmonton Oilers, 7-0, in Game 3. After posting back to back shutouts, Edmonton starting goalie Cam Talbot was pulled after allowing five goals on 24 shots. Backup Laurent Brossoit did not do much better allowing two goals on six shots.

San Jose’s win could be the turning point in the series and the end for the young and inexperienced Oilers. Sharks centers Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture both scored twice and Brent Burns added three assists. In the Sharks two losses, they failed to record more than 23 shots. In both wins, the Sharks were able to generate offense and at least 32 shots.

After getting blown out, heading back to Alberta could be just what Edmonton needs to refocus. The Oilers need to be better on special teams. Edmonton has converted just 8.3 percent of their power plays. On the other side, the Sharks are converting 22.7 percent of their power plays.

The Oilers are averaging only 25 shots per game. If they want to advance they need to get more shots per game. Improving on their 43.9 faceoff percentage would help Edmonton maintain possession and generate more offense.
