Delaware

Tim Wilson, Maryland Terrapins

College football Hall of Famer Creighton Miller, who earned consensus All-American honors at Notre Dame in 1943, attended high school in Delaware, but was actually born in Cleveland, Ohio, making him ineligible for our list.

That leaves New Castle native and University of Maryland running back Tim Wilson as the best college RB from the First State. Best known as the fullback leading the way for legendary Houston Oilers running back Earl Campbell, Wilson was a dangerous runner himself with the Terrapins.

From 1974-76, Wilson gained 1,169 yards and scored 12 rushing touchdowns at Maryland. He also caught 29 passes for 309 yards and three scores. That span was one of the most successful in school history as the Terps posted a 28-7-1 record, earned three straight bowl appearances, and finished each season ranked among the top 15 teams in the country.

In 1976, the Terps were 11-1, with a perfect 5-0 record in ACC play, and finished No. 8 in the final AP poll after a 30-21 loss to the Houston Cougars in the Cotton Bowl. The 11 wins set a school record that has yet to be broken, though the 2002 squad tied the mark while playing two more games. Wilson ranked second on the team in rushing (610 yards) as a senior in ’76, but led the squad with six rushing touchdowns.

Wilson was selected by the Oilers in the third round for the 1977 NFL Draft. He played six seasons in Houston and two with the New Orleans Saints. Wilson was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in 1991.
